Dozens killed in Jamaican violence

There are at least 27 people dead in Kingston, Jamaica. They were killed in the middle of an all-out police sudden attack on a suspected drug lord's stronghold. 26 of the dead were civilians and one was a Jamaican Defense Force member. Other 25 civilians and six defense force members were injured. The government said that the ones who were killed were mostly males.

We think that it is so sad to know that innocent people were killed. It is a shame to see how their family will suffer. The violence in the world has become a big problem. It is bad that the majority of the news are of violence and massacres. A lot of people suffer in 365 days, its very sad.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a Russian prisioner was once the richest man in Russia. Tells the latest corruption case that prevent him of getting out of jail. He was the head of an oil company called Yukos, was imprisoned since 2003, for comiting fraud and tax evasion. He dosent know if the corruption is coming from political, emotional, or self-interest. If this case continues, he will be imprisoned for over 22 years.

We think that its very interesting this corruption case. We think it can relate to some problems we have in Guatemala. They should do something better to solve the problem. It is shocking that the guy had a lot of money and wasted his money.

Child is lone survivor in Libya plane crash

Author: Stephanie Halasz
Date: May 13,2010

A 8-year-old Dutch kid is the only survivor of a deadly plane crash in Lybia. Other 92 passengers and 11 crew members were killed when the plane, Afriqiyah Airways crashed while trying to land into Tripoli International Airport. The kid, Ruben van Assouw, suffered a lot of fractures and had an operation at Al Khadra Hospital in Tripoli.

We think that it is very sad that these kid is alone because he's family died. It would be interesting that they figured out how the plane crashed because it was a big tragedy. At least its good that this kid survived. Its really sad what happened and we hope the kid has good authority.

Three dead as Greek strike grows violent

Date: May 5,2010
Author: CNN's Diana Magnay, Erin McLaughlin and Mary Retiniotis

Three people dead as an aftermath. The cause of death was a bombing in the central bank in Athens, Greece. The victims were employees in the bank (two women and a man). Protesters tossed bottles and other things to the Riot Police, yelling "torturers" and "liars". Protesters burnt garbage bins and cars. They also threw flames from buildings and fire trucks, burning ground, such as the ground in front of the Temple of Zeus.

We think that its very impressive how Greeks could be so violent, we could never see this coming. Its interesting to see this news right after we learned about Greek Mythology. Its sad that this happened, because of this 3 people lost their lives. They shouldn't do it so violent, they would've done it more calmly.

Teen begins ascent of Mount Everest

Authors: CNN Wire Staff
Date: April 27, 2010

A 13-year-old kid called Jordan Romero began to climb the worlds highest mountain, Mount Everest. Accompanied by his father, stepmother and a team of sherpas and yaks that helped carry their 4,400 pounds of gear. He's father, Paul Romero said that it required technical climbing in tough weather conditions. The kid says that its a tough mountain and that its very hard. He is learning a lot about culture and people of China and Nepal.

We think that this kid has a lot of courage to do this. He is very brave to be doing that at his age. The kid must be very strong because not every teen does this. It is very shocking that a kid with such age can climb a mountain with such height. We hope that he reaches this goal he has.

Authorities in Midwestern states were flooded Wednesday night. People saw a giant "fireball" in the sky. The fireball was visible for about 15 minutes. There was a sonic boom, houses and trees shook. The ball of light exploded in the sky. Afterwards there was a meteor shower.

We think its very interesting that this happened, its very shocking that this happened. It may be life from another planet. It is very weird, and we would like to know from where it comes. We would like to see what will happen.

Joshua Graham Packer of 20 years old is facing charges of the murder of Brock and Davina Husted. They were stabbed to death in their California house. 2 children weren't hurt, but Davina was 4 months pregnant. Packer was dressed in dark clothing and wore a motorcycle helmet. The two children didn't notice the dark clothed stranger go into their house while they were watching T.V. Packer is being held on $2.2 million bail at the Ventura County Main Jail.

We think that its a great news that they caught a killer, its one less in the U.S. Its good that they caught him because what he did was very bad. We also think that its horrible to see where the world is going, but the good side is that he did not kill the children. It was stupid to do something like that.

April 5th, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico, with 2 people dead and 100 injured in the process. The earthquake struck at 3:40 pm. It struck at about 110 miles southeast of Tijuana, Mexico. This earthquake took away all of the electric power from Mexicali. One person was killed in a building that collapsed in Mexicali. That quake was not enough, there were small earthquakes later on.

We think that there have been a lot of earthquakes now a days, its very sad because a lot of people have died. These earthquakes are really dangerous. It is very curious that there has been tremors all over the world recently. We also think its very weird because this year in every month there has been at least 1 earthquake.

Catholic Church's sex abuse goes global

Date: March 19, 2010
By: Dan Gilgoff
Pope Benedict XVI has signed a pastoral letter about Ireland's abusive priests. Ireland has been striving to earn respect after a downfall when revelation of abusive priests. This wasnt the first case, in 1986, Peter Hullermann was convicted of minor abuse, afterwards, he was taken off of his position as priest. Over 12 countries are allegating of this. People in Asia and Africa, where Catholicism is growing, is said that wont have this impact. This crisis could make people leave this religion.
We think its good that the Pope is banning priests who do such things. We also think that its bad that they abuse. We think that its sad that people who inspire others are abusive, and bad. Last of all, we think that those priests must be really evil, mad, and that they don't have shame, because they made an oath to be good, and clearly they aren't. In conclusion, we think its bad to know that the world is being so bad, when God made us to be good.

Author: Emily Chang

Cats and dogs trying to get out of the cage, this isn't a pet store, its a meat store. The Chinese government is trying to ban this meal. If any person violates this law, they could face 15 days in prison and a small fine. If any business men are found selling this meat they could get a fine of $73,500.

Our opinion is that it is cruel that people could kill this loyal animals to eat. They shouldn't be eating this animals because they are pets. We think it is good that they ban people in China to eat cats and dogs. We also think that its good that they put attention to this problem. Its great that they banned people to eat and sell this animals, that are meant to be pets.

26-foot high waves crashed into a cruise ship that was stationed at a Barcelona port. This tidal wave killed two people and injured 14. The victims who died were a German and an Italian. The waves smashed five windows into pieces on the deck. Maltese government officials begin investigating.

We think its shocking that a wave so tall hit the cruise ship. We also think that it was terrible that the cruise members died while trying to enjoy vacations. This are consequences that are happening because we didn't take care of the planet. It is very sad thinking about what the family that lost there familiars.

More than 2 million affected by earthquake, Chile's president says

Authors: Rolando Santos, Brian Byrnes and Patty Lane
Date: February 27, 2010

While the sun was setting in Chile on Saturday, there was an earthquake that affected about 2 million people in some way. More than 300 people were killed and 15 were missing. The earthquake was a 8.8-magnitude quake. The earthquake occurred at a depth of nearly 22 miles. There was a lot of damage, including buildings and highways.

Our opinion is that it was shocking about all of the earthquakes that have been. We also think that it is scary that there has been a lot of earthquakes. It's a shame all of the people that have died and all of the structures destroyed. And that it is very curious that there were so many earthquakes in such a short period of time. We feel bad for all of the people that have died.

Olympic luger dies on practice.

This article is about a Georgian luger, Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, died while on a final practice before Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. He died because the track was poorly constructed. There was a curve, No. 11, which came after a speedy road, in which he tragicly went out of the curve, and then he hit a steel post. Georgian officials say that the other lugers had been worried about that curve, but Kumaritashvili was the unlucky one, and he died. He was given CPR by the officials near the death site, and then he was taken to the hospital, in which the doctors were unable to revive him.

We think that he was unlucky, because he died giving a "show" to others, and also died doing his hobbie. We also think that its very sad that in a couple of games that unites the world, a luger died at such young age, but worse of all... who knows how many children were watching his terrible, and mercy-less death.

Suicide bomber strikes U.S. base

Author: Frederik Pleitgen
Date: February 11, 2010

There were 5 U.S. soldiers wounded on Thursday, when a suicide bomber attacked a U.S. base. The attacker blew up the bomb about 9 p.m. while in the "sleeping area" on the base. They don't know how the bomber got into the base, but some investigations show the attacker was wearing an Afghan border police uniform. NATO's International Security Assistance Force said that "several ISAF service members from the United States were injured" in an explosion on their base in eastern Afghanistan's Paktia province. They haven't confirmed that the explosion was put by a suicide bomber.

Our opinion is that it was a shocking case, and that the guy who entered the U.S. base was really intelligent . And that it is easy to active bombs and that is bad activating bombs and killing people for it. I think it was bad and shocking that people are killing people that want to make safe places and that are takingcare of them. I hope it doosent happen again.

Bodies found from Ethiopian Airlines crash

Author: Cal Perry and Nada Hussein
Date: January 26, 2010

On Monday British, French and Cypriot aircraft and a U.S. warship joined rescue crews searching the Mediterranean Sea off Lebanon's coast, where an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed with 90 people aboard. Later the crews found 21 bodies but no survivors. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409 left Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut about 2:30 a.m. and was headed to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. It disappeared from radar a few minutes after the takeoff. Fourteen bodies were brought to Beirut Hospital.

We think its good that they found some survivors. We also think that it was shocking that the airplane crashed and that a lot of people died. And we think that next time they should have more precaution and that it is sad that there were a lot of losses. Also we think that a lot of people lost their family.

Former Guatemalan president charged in U.S.A. for money-laundering-

Author: N/A
Date:January 25
Former President Alfonso Portillo is accused for money-laundering by U.S. people. He was chased down and caught, and now, U.S.aians the ones that think that are Americans, are asking us that if Portillo can be deported and be brought down to U.S. for punishment. A big judge indicated his punishment. Portillo stole 1.5 million dollars from Taiwan worth of donations. Portillo used the money stolen for expensive cars and other luxuries.
In our opinion, Portillo is selfish, for using the stolen money from his governance just to buy expensive cars and luxuries. We also think he made a lot of bad things like killing, stealing and being a bad president for Guatemala but know I think is really good that he is in jail but they should also bust the plenty of other bad people in Guatemala. And we think its good they found him, so he should pay for everything he did. Hopefully Guatemala will inprove in the future in there security.

Boy, 7, raises $240,000 for Haiti appeal

Author: Agnes Teh
Date: January 26, 2010

Charlie Simpson, a seven-year-old boy raised more than $240,000 for the Haiti earthquake. This kid form Fulham, London had in mind to raise £500 to help Haiti by cycling five miles around a local park. He wanted to make some money so he could buy food, water, and tents for everyone in Haiti. He made a web page that was a fundraiser page for Haiti. A lot of people entered the site and began to donate. More donations began pouring in and then he passed the £100,000 mark thanks to the British media. The money raised by Charlie Simpson will go to UNICEF's Haiti Earthquake Children's Appeal that will pay for water, sanitation, education, nutrition, and child protection.

We think that if a boy of 7 years old can raise that amount of money, we can raise much more. That is a nice boy and very intelligent. We also think that its very nice that a boy such age can think so strongly about Haitians that he actually could make $240,000. He has a lot of courage.

Miep Gies, Anne Frank protector, dies at 100

Author- Unknown
Date- January 11, 2010

Miep Gies, who protected the diary of Anne Frank, which did not fall into the hands of Nazis after the teen's arrest, died at the age of 100. She and other three protected Anne Frank's family of four, plus another four. When they were betrayed, two of Miep's team were arrested for fraud, she and another friend were left behind with Frank's diary. Miep respected Anne's privacy, and didn't read the diary, which was given to her(Anne) by Otto, her father, which was a gift from Gies.

Our opinion is that its sad that such a hero, both for Jews, and for anyone else died. She was a good person, and we hope she'll rest in peace. We also think that it was shocking that she died and that she was one of our best sources to know about Anne Frank. We also think that a great idol died, and that its sad because although she might have suffered alot, they mantained them.
